Mendham School District Upgrades Underway, $63K Playground Grant Won

Work tied to the 2025 bond referendum includes an arts center, science lab, roof work and a Hilltop library update.

MENDHAM, NJ — Construction is moving ahead this summer across the Mendham Borough School District as work continues on improvements approved by voters through the district's 2025 bond referendum.

The projects include a new Performing Arts Center addition, a sixth-grade science lab, roof work at Mountain View Middle School, and a renovation of the library media center at Hilltop School.

The most visible project is the new Performing Arts Center addition. The district reported that crews have made progress since breaking ground earlier this year on the facility, which is intended to give students a dedicated space for performances, music education, public speaking and other creative learning opportunities. According to the district, the addition will include a stage, lighting and sound systems, and a flexible classroom to expand arts programming.

"Each phase of construction brings us one step closer to providing our students with learning spaces that reflect the excellence of our educational programs," said Superintendent Dr. Mitzi Morillo. "We are grateful for our community's continued support and patience as these important projects take shape. The improvements underway today will benefit Mendham Borough students for decades to come."

Other referendum-funded work is also underway while school is out of session. At Mountain View Middle School, construction has started on a new sixth-grade science lab designed to support hands-on STEM learning, according to the district. The school is also getting a roof replacement project that the district said will improve the building's integrity and efficiency.

At Hilltop School, the library media center is being transformed into what the district described as a modern, flexible learning environment. The district said the updated space is intended to better support student learning.

The district also announced a separate grant award tied to Hilltop School. Mendham Borough School District received a $63,700 Local Recreation Improvement Grant through the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs to enhance outdoor learning and play opportunities at the school and for the broader community.

According to the district, the grant will pay for a music-themed inclusive playground designed to create an accessible space where children of all abilities can play together. The district said it plans to continue sharing updates as construction progresses.

Residents are encouraged to visit the district's referendum website for project updates, construction photos, timelines and more information about the voter-approved improvements.
