WWII Vet, 8-Decade Brookside Resident Dies at 91
'Uncle Dick' was a gentleman's gardener in the area.

Richard Mervin has just about seen it all in Brookside.
The longtime resident died at his home on March 19, just a day before his 92nd birthday, according to Bailey Funeral Homes.
Known to many as “Uncle Dick,” Mervin lived in Brookside for the last 86 years, 78 of them in the same home where he was raised after moving from Orange.

Mervin served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946.
He then studied horticulture at Rutgers University and was a “gentlemen’s” gardner for most of his life, laying out formal gardens for many estates in the area.

A memorial service will be held for Mervin on Saturday, May 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mendham, followed by a burial at Hilltop Cemetery.
