WWII Veteran, Chester Great Grandfather Dies at 95

Walter Markey Jr. had a love for technology.

Walter Markey Jr. served his countries and others during his nine decades.

The longtime Chester resident died Sunday at the age of 95.

Markey was born in the Bronx, New York, and lived in Chester for 48 years.

His love of technology began when he mastered the use of his P-38 fighter plane during World War II to his work in the private sector as a member of Short Hills B. Altman & Company store.

Markey volunteered for the Morris County Soil Conservation District for more than 20 years and loved being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Markey is survived by his two daughters, two sons, seven grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife, Martha, and one daughter.

A celebration of life will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27 at William J. Leber Funeral Home at 15 Furnace Road in Chester. Memorial donations may be made to St. Lawrence Church’s Good Samaritans, 375 P.O. Box 730, Chester, NJ 07930.
