Middlesex PD Investigating After Dirt Bikes, ATVs, Cyclists Wreak Havoc On Route 28

The incidents unfolded in two waves May 2 evening — police are reviewing evidence and asking residents with photos or video to come forward.

MIDDLESEX, NJ — Middlesex Borough police are investigating two separate incidents May 2 evening in which groups of dirt bike, ATV and bicycle riders operated recklessly through public streets, a shopping center and a local middle school, defying officers' orders to stop.

At approximately 6 p.m., a group of dirt bikes and ATVs was observed on Route 28 riding erratically, performing stunts and refusing to comply with lawful orders from officers.

About two hours later, at approximately 8:15 p.m., a separate group of bicyclists engaged in similar behavior along Route 28, within the Middlesex Shopping Center and on the grounds of Von E. Mauger Middle School.

"This behavior is not only illegal, it puts lives at risk — including those of innocent residents, pedestrians, and the riders themselves," the Middlesex Borough Police Department said in a statement.

Police said they are conducting a comprehensive investigation and reviewing all available evidence to identify those involved. Anyone found to have participated will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, authorities said.

Residents with information, photos or video related to either incident are asked to contact the Middlesex Borough Police Department at (732) 356-1900.
