NJ E-Bike Law: What Middlesex Riders Need To Know Before July 19

Riders have until July 19 to register, insure, and license their e-bikes — and no one under 15 may legally operate one under the new law.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, NJ — New Jersey's new e-bike law is now in effect, and local riders have until July 19 to get their bikes registered, insured and licensed before the grace period ends.

The law, which took effect Jan. 19, 2026, covers two categories of devices: low-speed electric bicycles, which are pedal-assist bikes with a motor topping out at 20 mph, and motorized bicycles, which use pedal-assist or throttle power and can reach up to 28 mph. Operators had six months from the effective date to bring their existing e-bikes into compliance.

Here is what riders need to know.

Who Can Ride

No one under 15 may operate a covered device. Riders ages 15 and 16 must carry a motorized bicycle license or permit issued by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission. Riders 17 and older must have either a valid NJ driver's license or a motorized bicycle license.

What You Must Carry

All operators are required to have three documents on them while riding: a license or permit, a registration certificate and an insurance ID card. Failure to produce any of these is an enforceable offense.

Where You Cannot Ride

E-bikes are prohibited on Interstate highways, roadways with speed limits above 50 mph and certain divided highways or rail rights of way.

Other Rules

E-bike operators are subject to the same traffic laws as motor vehicle drivers. Any crash involving a covered device must be reported to both the MVC and the NJ Department of Transportation.

Riders who have not yet registered and insured their e-bikes should do so before the July 19 grace period expires. Registration is handled through the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission at njmvc.gov.
