Middlesex Will Propose New E-Bike and Scooter Rules: What To Know

MIDDLESEX, NJ — The Middlesex Borough committee will weigh new rules for e-bike, scooters and hoverboards as well as new penalties for repeat offenders at meeting on Tuesday

The borough will look to create a new ordinance that would govern where e-bike and electric scooters can be used.

Under the proposed rules, people would be prohibited from riding bicycles, scooters, e-bikes, hoverboards, and Segways on public sidewalks, in borough-owned parks, and in borough-owned parking lots where motor vehicles are not permitted.

Riders would no longer be allowed to ride through marked or unmarked crosswalks.

Instead, bicyclists must dismount and walk their bikes when crossing a roadway. Riders would not be allowed to carry passengers on e-bikes or scooters unless the passenger is seated in an approved seat

Penalties

Violators could face escalating fines:

First offense: Up to $250

Second offense: Up to $1,000

Third and subsequent offenses: Up to $2,000
