MIDDLESEX, NJ —Middlesex Borough is reminding residents that new e-bike regulations will take effect next month.
Under the new rules taking effect on July 19, e-bike operators must be at least 15 years old and possess either a valid driver's license or an e-bike/motorized bicycle license or permit issued through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (NJMVC).
E-bikes must also be registered with the NJMVC.
Police noted that motorized bicycles are required to carry insurance coverage, while low-speed electric bicycles do not require insurance but must still be registered.
Helmets are mandatory for all e-bike riders regardless of age.
The department is also urging riders to follow traffic laws and practice safe riding habits, including traveling with the flow of traffic, stopping at stop signs and traffic signals, watching for pedestrians and vehicles, and avoiding reckless operation.
Officials encourage residents to review the new regulations to ensure compliance before the July 19 implementation date.
