MIDDLESEX, NJ — Backpacks are coming back out in Middlesex as students prepare to begin the 2026-27 school year next Thursday.

The first morning back will ease families into the routine with an early dismissal, according to the Middlesex Borough School District. Students will also leave early Friday before schools close Monday for Labor Day.

Teachers and staff get a head start on the school year. They report Tuesday for an in-service day and continue professional learning Wednesday while students remain home.

The district includes Hazelwood, Parker and Watchung elementary schools, Woodland Intermediate School, Von E. Mauger Middle School and Middlesex High School.

Families can download the district's mobile app for documents, events, news updates and alerts throughout the year. They may also want to double-check transportation arrangements, schedules and opening-day instructions before students leave home.
