Student Brought Weapon Into Joseph R. Bolger Middle School, Police Say

KEANSBURG, NJ — A criminal charge was filed against a student at Joseph R. Bolger Middle School in Keansburg for bringing a weapon onto school grounds.

The district did not say what the weapon was. However, it was not a gun or firearm of any kind, the Keansburg Board of Education said Monday.

Social media rumors saying this are untrue and not accurate, stressed the school district.

"This allegation is simply untrue and appears to stem from a misunderstanding of the charge," said the school district. "This specific incident DID NOT involve a firearm or gun of any kind. There was no 3D-printed gun, pistol, unloaded gun, loaded gun, Orbeez gun, water gun, or any other type of firearm involved. Again, no firearm was involved in this incident."

The school district said the criminal charge filed against the student has the words "firearms/weapons" in it, which made some in the public think a gun was involved.

The term "weapon" as defined by state law "may include items such as baseball bats, scissors, mace, or other objects," said the district.

The district called the social media rumors swirling that a student brought a gun to school "wrong and reckless."

A representative from the Keansburg Police Department will attend the next Board of Education meeting on June 16 at the middle school to talk about what happened "and reiterate that no firearm was involved in this incident," said the school district.
