As Patch reported July 22, more than 20 people applied so far to be the new Middletown school superintendent.

All the board members will review the applications, and then each board member is asked to select candidates they want to bring in for interviews, which start next Tuesday.

The Middletown school board engaged the New Jersey School Boards Association to help it do a superintendent search.

Currently, Kevin Cullen is interim superintendent of Middletown schools. The school board selected him to take over the district's top job because superintendent Jessica Alfone retired early; her last day was June 30.

Alfone retired early with two years still left in her five-year contract. Mary Ellen Walker, the superintendent before Alfone, quit early, too, with years still left in her contract.

The school board approved Cullen to be acting superintendent from July 1 of this year through 2027, or until the school district hires a permanent superintendent.

Cullen is being paid an additional $120 per day in addition to his current salary to do both jobs: acting superintendent and assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and special education.
