With standout running back Matt Belenko, new quarterback Derek Grasso, and a veteran defense, the Lions open Sept. 3 and close the regular season with another Thanksgiving clash at Middletown South.
   

• Whiting man, 80, dies in crash on Route 79 in Marlboro (app.com) — A Route 79 crash in Marlboro on Sept. 11 left an 80-year-old Whiting man dead and a 52-year-old driver from Port Monmouth in Middletown with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators say the victim's Toyota Camry Solara crossed the center line into a Ford F350, and authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to contact county or Marlboro detectives.
