Hitting High School

There's always a first for everything. Today, was the first day of school for my boys but what was new about it was that all three were at the same building. First time. My oldest is a senior and his twin brothers are incoming freshmen. Hard to believe. I remember them going through the usual channels...pre-school, kindergarten, elementary, middle school and now the high school. For me its one-stop shopping, easy drop-off and pick-up - the ease of just one building to drive to. But just the thought of it is difficult. The idea that all three of my boys have hit high school age. Just one more chapter opening as another one closes. Bittersweet.
As I dropped them off this morning and watched them run off with their friends joking and laughing as they entered the big school, I knew we had arrived at this moment as we should. I knew they were ready, I knew they were happy and well adjusted.
This was no longer the days of me dropping them off at pre-school and staring from the window as they cried their eyes out. It was no longer first or second grade when they struggled to hold back the tears on the first day of school. They were now well on their way to being young men, and I was the one who got a bit teary eyed as I drove away.
