Letter: Candidates for Millburn Township Committee Hope to Improve Pedestrian Safety, Traffic Control
Cheryl Burstein and Stephen Thomas have lived in town for 20 years. As candidates for election, the pair promise to be independent thinkers.
The following article is an opinion piece submitted to Millburn-Short Hills Patch by Cheryl Burstein and Stephen Thoma, Candidates for Millburn-Short Hills Township Committee
Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2014, is fast approaching. Cheryl Burstein and Stephen Thomas have been working hard to promote their candidacies for the Millburn-Short Hills Township Committee.
Cheryl and Stephen have lived in Millburn Township for more than 20 years. Cheryl raised her two daughters here, Stephen his two sons. Both of them have been deeply committed to and actively involved in our community.

Cheryl has served on the Zoning Board of Adjustment for the past seven years and Stephen is an active voice on many important issues, serving on the Township’s Parking Task Force for several years and coaching a variety of youth sports. Because of their diverse experience, they have been fortunate to meet and engage many residents to discuss issues of importance and concern to all of us.
Cheryl’s experience as an attorney and counselor and Stephen’s as a writer and reporter, has helped both of them develop skills that will be needed if our community is to address complex issues.

The current Township Committee is made up of members who allow little debate or discussion of issues. The addition of independent thinkers who might offer diverse opinions is healthy and can only benefit the Township as a whole.
For the past few years many of the issues have remained constant, a desire to reinvigorate the downtown, a wish to better control traffic and improve pedestrian safety and, of paramount concern to us all, a hope that we can ensure the safety and security of all our residents. More recently, flooding and the Township’s ability to respond adequately, effectively,and responsibly in the wake of major events has quickly become an issue that must be tackled.
Political and personal agendas must be set aside. Instead, we must work together to focus on the issues that confront all residents of Millburn/Short Hills.
