Emergency Services Day To Show What Happens When You Dial 911

There's a car accident and you call 911 for help. What next?

That's what people who attend the Emergency Services Day on Sunday can learn. The event is scheduled for 1-4 p.m. at the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad headquarters, which is located at the corner of Glen Avenue and Lackawanna Road. The squad is sponsoring the event.

Leigh Goodman, of the squad, said the event is intended to be a thank you to Millburn-Short Hills. The squad recently purchased a new "state of the art" ambulance, and was looking for a way to introduce it to the community. The more than $250,000 needed for the ambulance was raised from within Millburn-Short Hills.

The ambulance can accommodate two stretchers and possibly a third patient in an emergency and has room for at least six crew members.

The new ambulance will be dedicated at 3 p.m.

The event itself will teach what happens when someone calls 911.

"There are a lot of agencies involved, but we are essentially one team," Goodman said of the town's various emergency responders. "This is a great way to highlight how we all work together. We respond to 911 calls, but we also stand by at a lot of local events."

Those emergency responders will be at the event Sunday and show their various equipment.

Atlantic Ambulance will also land a medivac helicopter, weather permitting, at 3:30 p.m. in the Millburn Public Library parking lot.

There will also be food and drinks and activities for children, including making their own first aid bags. There will be a refresher on CPR techniques and information on how to become a volunteer with the squad.
