Essex County College Saturday Youth Program Begins Jan. 24

Registration for the Saturday Youth Program will take place on Jan. 17, Jan. 24 and Jan. 31.

Essex County College’s Saturday Youth Program will begin its Spring 2015 semester program on Jan. 24.

The program of sessions will take place at Essex County College’s main Newark campus. The classes are designed for children between 5 years old and high school-aged children. Some of the programs offered have several sections to accommodate different age groups, Essex County College said in a release.

In-person registration for the program will take place on Jan. 17, Jan. 24 and Jan. 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in room 3291 of the A. Zachary Yamba Building on the Newark campus. For more information about registration and tuition, call (973) 877-3079.

The programs being offered by Essex County College this spring and their intended age groups are listed below:

Youth programs include “Algebra,” for students in sixth through ninth grade; “Bricks 4Kidz Technic Build,” for children ages five to eight; “Computer Discovery,” for youngsters six to eight years old; “Computer Graphics,” for students ages nine to 15; “Dance Combo,” for children ages five to 11; “Discovering Young Artists,” for youth ages five to 13, and “Fun with Phonics,” for children in kindergarten through second grade.

Also, “Geometry,” for students in grades nine and ten; “Improving Penmanship,” for students ages nine to 12; “Improving Reading Comprehension,” for children in grades one through eight; “Keyboarding and Word Processing,” for children ages nine to 15; “Martial Arts,” for children ages six through 15; “Musical Performers Studio,” for those ages eight to 15; “Problem Solving Math,” for students in grades one through six; “Science for Youth,” for children ages eight to 11, and “Writing with a Purpose,” for students in grades five to eight.

Essex County College will also offer test preparation classes on Saturdays during the youth program sessions, the release said. The test prep classes being offered are as follows:

The NJ ASK (Assessment of Skills and Knowledge) Test Prep course provides students in grades three through six with the instruction and skills practice needed to succeed on the language arts and math sections of the test. Only students who attend public school will take these tests.

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) will prepare 10th and 11th graders for the content, strategy, and time management of the test covering math, critical reading, and writing.

SAT English and Math preparation classes for students in 11th and 12th grades will also be held.

Test preparation classes for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC) will also be held in language arts and mathematics for students in grades three through eight. PARCC is a set of assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards which measure whether students are on track to be successful in college and their careers.
