Millburn Instates New Firefighters

Fire Chief introduces four new firefighters at Township Committee meeting.

The Millburn Township Committee instated four new firefighters on Tuesday night. All four had been in the military and received awards, including one who had been a firefighter in the Air Force.

Millburn Fire Chief Mike Roberts told the committee that all the candidates had gone through an extensive background checks.

“We are entrusted to go into strangers’ homes,” he said, adding that because of that all the firefighters are held to the highest ethical standards.

The candidates also had to go through psychological, personality, medicals tests – “we even looked at their Facebook page,” he said, getting a laugh from the standing room only audience that included firefighters from Newark, Boonton and Picatinny, N.J.

Roberts introduced the four candidates, who were sworn in. Here are the bios Roberts presented:

Stephen Tallody of Boonton, N.J., served as a Fire Operation Journeyman in the U.S. Air Force from 2003 to 2007. He received numerous awards and commendations including: Air Force Achievement Medal, the Air Force Training Ribbon, the National Defense Medal, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal and several others. Prior to coming to the Millburn Fire Department Steve was a Federal firefighter at Picatinny Arsenal. He is currently certified in FFI & II, as well as Hazardous Materials (Technician Level). In his capacity as a Picatinny firefighter, he was deployed to Millburn during Hurricane Irene with a water tanker to assist the fire department while our water pressure issues in the Wyoming section of town were inefficient to fight a fire.

Marlon Adams lives in West Orange with his wife Anita and their three sons Isaiah, Zechariah and Nicholas. He has been a member of the U.S. Army Reserve since 1992 where he currently holds the position of Platoon Sergeant. He received numerous awards and commendations including: the Iraqi/Afghanistan Campaign Medal w/Campaign Star, the Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the National Defense Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal as well as several others.

Augustin Muresan of Elizabeth served from 2002 to 2010 in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army National Guard where he worked as a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic. He received numerous awards and commendations including: the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal as well as several others.

Sean Slavin of Union is a graduate of Union County Magnet High School. He also attended Union County College. In 2002, Sean received a degree in Architecture from NJ Institute for Technology. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2002 to 2010 where he served as a Combat Engineer and achieved the rank of Sergeant. While in the service, he received the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Medal. Prior to coming to the Fire Department, Slavin was employed as a Draftsman/Carpenter.
