Millburn Man’s Fight With Pancreatic Cancer Raises Hope, Awareness

Diagnosed with cancer and told that he had just 3 to 6 months to live, Millburn's Michael Weinstein continues to raise awareness and hope.

MILLBURN, NJ — Essex County officials recently honored a Millburn man’s struggle with a deadly disease in honor of World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

During a meeting last month, the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders presented a commendation to Michael Weinstein, a Millburn resident and the New Jersey Affiliate Advocacy Coordinator for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

According to a freeholder news release, Weinstein was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2005 and was told that he had three to six months to live.

“I am one of the lucky ones who beat the odds and in November will become an 11-year survivor,” Weinstein wrote in a letter to the freeholder board. “As a resident of Millburn, New Jersey, it is my mission to reach out to the residents of New Jersey to pass on my story of hope to as many people as possible.”

“I’m sure many of you have had family members, acquaintances or someone that you know who has been touched by pancreatic cancer… I certainly have,” Freeholder Patricia Sebold of Livingston said. “And as public officials, we believe it is our responsibility and duty to raise awareness in our community and by doing so; ultimately, lives will be saved.”
