Millburn Soccer Club: Titans Win State Championship

A look at the weekly scores and updates from the traveling soccer league.

Millburn Soccer Club Action Week of May 16:

The Millburn Titans won the New Jersey  U10 State Cup Championship defeating the Marlboro Galaxy 2-1 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw in regulation play and two scoreless overtime periods.

To reach the finals, the Titans overcame a 3-1 deficit with three late goals in the last seven minutes of regular play to beat PDA Jinky 4-3 in the semi final match.  The Titans attribute their two come-from-behind wins to take the championship to a tremendous, heartfelt effort by the entire team and a well coached game by Justin Corazza.

In the semi-final game goals were scored by Matthew Knowles, Ben Kessler (2) and Matthew Jordan.  In the championship, a goal was scored by Ben Pampush and penalty kicks by Ben Pampush, Nick Maldonado, Matt Jordan and Noah Schwab.   Kyle Speckhart played two unbelievable games in goal including saving two penalty kicks in the winning effort.  Jonathon Wang and Sam Herbst played stellar defense and Ben Bograd, Igor Fast and Matt Bernstein made significant contributions at midfield.

The U-12 Sting triumphed the Westfield Heat 2-0 Thursday in Westfield.  Goals by Madeline Irvin and Julia Burakovsky accompanied by a solid defensive effort by keeper Lizzy Elder sealed the shut-out.

The Watchung Storm defeated the Millburn Jaguars 2-0 on Thursday. Stars for the Jaguars were Leah Baer in goal and Lucy Grebin on defense.

The Millburn Mustangs suffered an unfortunate 1-0 loss to the Cougar United Rockers Wednesday at home.  Defenders Paige Dana and Morgan Hersh powered the defense, while Darcey Morrison delivered a stellar offensive performance for the Mustangs.

On Saturday the Torpedoes lost an 6-4 shootout to the Hillsborough Thunder in Hillsborough.  Kyle Jacobs and Aidan Grigorian each scored twice for the Torpedoes and Evan Portnoi starred in goal.

The Inferno lost 2-0 to the West Orange Tornadoes despite stellar effort from defender Sudeep Sanju and keepers Jared Simons and Ethan Ostroff.

The Millburn Missiles tied the Bridgewater Panthers 2-2 in a tough game on Saturday.  Both goals for the Missiles were scored by Alex Dorfschneider.  There were aggressive plays by Will Maddox, Vikram Mahendru and Eric Lieberman and excellent defensive plays by Zack Dorfschneider and Teddy McGraw. 

Two goals from Barri Boyarsky and a tally from Rachel Broder helped the Millburn Hornets earn a 3-3 tie at the Cranford Crush on Saturday in U-10 Girls action.  Kathleen Cioffi starred in defense for the Hornets.

The Millburn Python tied 2-2 with Soccer Academy Quickstrike.  Cristiano Hocken scored the first goal with an assist by Richie Schiekofer.  Eric Silverstein added the second goal off a feed by Kyle Mangold.  Gabriel Nadell and Justin Wang excelled on defense.

In its first game on Saturday, the Millburn Soccer Club's Flash defeated Metuchen United, 3-2.  Melissa Gates scored twice on assists from Anna Nesser and Karoline Policarpio, and Gioia Basile added an unassisted goal.  Kerri Driscoll and Emma Hou provided exceptional midfield play.  In their second game on Saturday, the Flash defeated the Cranford Chaos, 3-1.  Melissa Gates had a hat trick with assists from Grace Mayo, Essie Pasternak and Abbie Policarpio.

The MSC Eclipse U14 Girls celebrated the last home game of their travel program career on Sunday at Millburn High School Stadium with a 4-1 win over the Flemington Soccer Club Lightning U14 Girls. Tallying goals for the Eclipse were Emily Dalton with two and Tara Sood and Sara Salter with one each. Emily Cross and Katie Fitzgerald split keeper duties for the Eclipse.

On Sunday, the Tornadoes continued their recent unbeaten run with a 1-0 victory over Bridegwater Lazio. Daniella Petrocelli scored the decisive goal on 20 minutes following a fluid passing move down the right wing between Mica MacInnes and Tori DeFilippo, with MacInnes providing the final cross for Petrocelli to convert. Catherine O'Neill turned in a solid performance for the Tornadoes on the left flank in both midfield and defence.

Goals by Connor Kirkwood, Will Elder, Tyler Koref and 2 from Romeo Ruiz led the Meteors to a 5-2 win over the Metuchen Blast. Jake Ruderman and Max Winstanley shared strong Goalkeeping efforts.

Millburn Avalanche defeated the Clark Clippers 5-1. Keith Knopp scored two goals and goals by Jeremy Merdinger, Brandon Rothberg and Brett Dinowitz contributed to the win. Assist were provided by Thomas Bevelsborg, Aidan Favia and Brett Dinowitz. Sam Curtis, Alexander Tager, Ben Goldman. Stellar saves by Steven Karp played well on defense.

The Inferno beat the Readington Rascals 3-1 with goals by Nicholas Visceglia, Ben Schonhorn and Bennett Garcia.  Forward Myles Ostroff and defender Michael Diamond also starred for the Inferno.

The Blizzard tied the Edison United Titans 2-2. Dan Rappoport and Ben Haymes each tallied a goal, with Haymes' goal being scored on a penalty kick. Johnny Stern and Matt Newman played tough defense for the Blizzard.

The North Brunswick Kickers defeated the Millburn Jaguars 2-1 on Sunday.  The Jaguars goal was scored by Millie Dweck.  Stars for the Jaguars also included Lindsay McLaughlin, Caroline Weinrauch and Emma Wishnow.

The Torpedoes lost a 2-1 match to the Lawrence Sharks at Millburn High School.  Aidan Grigorian scored for the Torpedoes on a great setup from Max Comito and Brandon Hersh while Jack Simon starred in goal.

The Millburn Barracudas beat the Aberdeen-Matawan United 6-0.  The Barracuda offense got off to a thunderous start scoring three goals in the first three minutes.  Aubrey Wright led the scoring with two goals, while Devon Thomas, Julia Pampush, Leah Mangold and Chloe Zegas each contributed one.  Kyra Goldman, Paige Nemet and Caleigh Trachtman played tough in the mid-field helping drive their team to another victory.

The Sting took the Bridgewater Avalanche 1-0 at home.  Jess Alexander assisted Julia Burakovsky's goal.  Sensational defense by Sam Okinow, Meg Damstrom and Allie Hopper left the Avalanche scoreless.

The Millburn Spirit lost 3-0 to the South Plainfield Hammertime. Both teams played great, but with not many substitutions the Spirit was defeated. On Spirit there was strong defending by Ali Graves and Jacquline Marino, with great mid-fielding by Georgia Ressler and Sammy Grossman.

 In Sunday play, Ilana Nemerow scored the lone goal for the Crusaders in a 6-1 loss to the Holmdel Strikers.  Alison Cundey and Remy Klugman also excelled on offense for the Crusaders.

On Sunday, the Flash came from behind to beat Watchung Hills 2-1.  Melissa Gates scored both goals with assists from Antonia Park and Katie Darvin.  Emily Mester starred in goal for the Flash.

The Millburn Blaze played the West Windsor Plainsboro Valiants and lost by a score of 4-1. Tyler Bernard scored the lone Millburn goal. The strong defense was anchored by Zach Graves, Jordan Brochin, Kyle Silbert and Ethan Lenner.

Samantha Goldman and Rachel Broder each scored one goal as the Millburn Hornets dropped a tough 4-2 decision to the West Windsor-Plainsboro Cheetahs on Sunday in U-10 Girls action.  Jessica Stern played outstanding defense for the Hornets who lost only for the second time this season.

Julia Fried scored a goal for the Millburn Cyclones in the first half of Sunday's game against the Metuchen Huskies off a feed from Jenny Adelman.  In the second half, Thais Barraque's last minute goal gave the Cyclones a 2-2 tie with the Huskies.  Fried earned the assist on Barraque's goal.  The Cyclones received stellar play from keepers Mary Pagano and Ellen Stoler.
