"The Secret Quilt Code of the Underground Railroad"
TMC invites the public to a talk with Colleen Hintz on 4/7/16 at 6:30 PM
The Thursday Morning Club invites the public to its free April 7th, 6:30 PM General Meeting to be held at the Madison Community House, 25 Cook Ave, Madison. In this presentation by Colleen Hintz, entitled “The Secret Quilt Code of the Underground Railroad”, Ms. Hintz will speak about the sewing of quilt blocks to create visual messages interpreted by slaves looking to gain their freedom in Canada via the underground railroad. The quilt blocks allowed for communication among slaves even as the slave owners forbid it. Ms. Hintz will tell us about the message contained in each block, using her own beautifully hand made quilt blocks.
Ms. Hintz, of Fruit of the Vine Vestments, has designed and created liturgical vestments since 1980. Her Personal Journey Stoles tell the story of the individual for whom they are created. She designed and created the “Gates of Hope” vestments for the Bishop of the Newark Episcopal Diocese as well as hangings and vestments for the Church of the Redeemer in Morristown. Ms. Hintz also speaks on the theology of vestments and enjoys creating liturgical art with children.
The evening will begin at 6:30 PM with a short business meeting immediately followed by Ms. Hintz’s presentation. Beverages and desserts will be served so please join us for this informative and visually delightful program.
