Sweets and Other Treats at Splurge Bakery

Millburn's newest bakery provides an array of dessert items and party options for special occasions.

Splurge Bakery, a new sweet shop at 105 Main Street in Millburn, may have opened their doors last October, but they continue to work hard to bring customers their special brand of finely baked goods.

“We’re building an offering of edible favorites,” said Julie Winer, co-owner of the bakery with her husband Stephen. “That’s what we want to provide for the downtown area and the community.”

The owners recently commemorated their new venture with a grand opening ceremony that brought out both customers and local officials. Among the guest in attendance were Mayor Sandy Haimoff, Karol McNulty, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, Chamber president Shayne Miller and Harold Klein, executive director of Downtown Millburn.

For the Winers, opening the bakery was the result of hard work. Julie started making personalized cookies for special events four years ago. As the business grew, the Short Hills residents decided to open Splurge.

The store’s name is apropos. The wide variety of treats that line the countertops and pastry case make it extremely difficult for customers to try just one item.

Splurge’s menu includes everything from homemade Oreo cookies, peppermint truffles and mini-cheesecakes to peanut butter graham cracker cakes, red velvet cupcakes, rugalah, biscotti and a host of other specialty items.

For customers in need of large orders, Splurge sells business card cookie tins, cookie trays and cookie and cupcake wedding favors.  “We also do birthday cakes and sheet cakes,” said Julie. “A new item we have is French macaroons. I think they’re going to be big with kids and people may start using them as favors.” Splurge also sells specialty fondant cakes. Recent creations include an intricate castle and a Tiffany box.

In an effort to make full use of their space, the Winers have an area, partitioned with glass, where customers can easily see cookies and other items being baked and decorated. The room is also used for birthday parties, decorating classes, and Ladies Night Out events. “We’re positioned in the community for entertainment,” Julie added. “We’re here to help people with all kinds of celebrations.”

Visit Splurge on Saturday and Sunday for their Spring Fling weekend. Free samples and free cookie decoration tips will be available. The Winers will also introduce several new ice coffee drinks and smoothies.
