Teen Arrested for Allegedly Lighting Mother's Car on Fire

Police say his mother was inside the car at the time, but she was not injured.

A Millburn teen was arrested for allegedly setting his mother's car on fire while she was in it.

The 17-year-old, whose name was withheld because of his age, was charged with aggravated arson, aggravated assault, criminal mischief, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was lodged at the Essex County Youth House.

Millburn police were called to the family's residence on Friday at just before 11 a.m. on a report the teen had lit the vehicle on fire during a dispute and the fire was extinguished.

Police said the teen poured gasoline on the hood of his mother's car and igniting it while she was inside the vehicle. She was not injured. He also is accused of throwing an arisoft pistol against the car. Police said they confiscated a pellet gun that was still in its box from the home.

The Millburn Fire Department also responded to the scene.
