Who Is Paying Millburn's Taxes?

Residential properties make up over 82 percent of the town's assessed values.

If you’re a taxpaying homeowner in Millburn, you’re keeping the township going.

Residential property owners in Millburn shoulder over four-fifths of the tax burden, according to data released in the 2015 municipal budget summary.

Altogether, the 6,217 parcels of residential property in Millburn are valued at $6.71 billion, making them worth 82.32 percent of the total municipal tax base.

Other taxable properties included:

  • Commercial – 15.68 percent, $1.27 billion assessed value
  • Apartments – 0.79 percent, $64.71 million
  • Industrial – 0.62 percent, $50.38 million
  • Vacant Land – 0.51 percent, $41.83 million
  • Business Personal Property – 0.07 percent, $6.04 million

Combined, the 6,586 parcels of taxable property in the township are assessed at $8.15 billion. The budget data presumed an average ratio of 87 percent to the true value, making the equalized valuation of taxable properties worth $9.33 billion.

A total of 96 property tax appeals were filed with the County Tax Board in 2014.

Altogether, the municipality paid out $1.15 in tax appeals last year.
