NEW JERSEY — New Jersey elections attract some big money, with record-setting amounts spent on issues such as gambling, rental homes, minimum wage and marijuana, according to a new report.

With a presidential-year race creeping closer, the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) recently released a list of the state’s top 10 “costliest” ballot questions.

The most expensive referendum ever put before voters? An effort to let casinos operate outside of Atlantic City – which failed in 2016. Lobbyists spent $24,669,426 on that ballot question, which would come out to $32,281,983 when adjusted for inflation.

Gambling has traditionally turned out a lot of election spending in New Jersey, with three of the other top issues also involving casinos or race tracks.
