10 New Jersey 'Staycation' Ideas For Weekend Getaways

Couldn't afford that big trip to Florida or the Bahamas? Think cheaper and go local, and you'll still have a good time.

You don't need to fly far away to have a good time. Especially if you don't have the time, the money and the babysitters to help. There is plenty to do right here in New Jersey, including beach trips, antique shopping, visiting historical parks, amusement parks and aquariums.

NBC4 New York recently came up with a list of the top 10 New Jersey destinations for a weekend getaway. Now that the weather is warmer and you can go outside more often, you might be looking to get away.

Yes, if you're parent, you're probably already frequently home to take care of the children and the family's needs, so you're big jaunt is to the backyard whiffle ball game. Or you're at a baseball or soccer game that's played three towns away because you need to watch your kid score a goal or get a hit.

But there are 10 places that probably offer something within an easy driving distance that you can squeeze in your busy schedule. Here is that News4 list, with a partial description:

  1. Lambertville: Stroll around Lambertville's charming streets, check out the Victorian homes and stop into one of the many antique shops. Lambertville is located on the Delaware River in Hunterdon County. While you're there, hop over the river to New Hope, Pa.
  2. Liberty State Park: Liberty State Park, located in Jersey City, overlooks Ellis Island and Lady Liberty. You can access both of those destinations by ferry.
  3. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area: If you like to swim, kayak, fish or hike, this place is for you.
  4. Essex County Paddle Boat House: Located in West Orange, the Essex County Paddle Boat House rents boats that hold up to four. Enjoy a day out on the water.
  5. Clinton: The view of the Clinton Red Mill Museum "is worth the trip to Clinton alone," says News4. There's lots of other things to keep you busy while you're there, though.
  6. Adventure Aquarium: This is a great spot for the kids. The Adventure Aquarium in Camden is home to the country's only great hammerhead shark exhibit. Plus, there are hippos. Can't lose.
  7. New Jersey State Botanical Garden: Located in Ringwood, this 96-acre spot features gardens and winding trails.
  8. Six Flags Great Adventure & Wild Safari: Love a good thrill? Head to Six Flags.
  9. Mountain Creek Resort: During the winter, Vernon Township’s Mountain Creek Resort is a ski and snowboarding resort. But in the summertime, it's a water park.
  10. Grounds For Sculpture: Located in Hamilton, Mercer County, The Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton has 42-acres of contemporary outdoor sculptures. Bring your camera!
