What is food's role in climate change? The Plant-Based for the Planet campaign is partnering with 12 Montclair eateries to spread the word.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — What is food’s role in climate change? The Plant-Based for the Planet campaign is partnering with a dozen restaurants in Montclair to help spread the word.

Earlier this month, nonprofits Humane Montclair and Planted Society announced that they’re partnering with the Montclair Township Department of Sustainability to encourage people to choose “plant-based options” as a strategy to decrease their carbon footprint.

As part of the campaign, 12 local restaurants are creating new, plant-based dishes and spotlighting their current “climate-forward” menu options. Learn more here.

Each Montclair restaurant will compete for votes from diners, who will choose their favorite plant-based options at the end of the March Initiative. Diners who vote will be entered to win eco-friendly prizes from participating sponsors.

The restaurant challenge will run until March 31.

“Bringing plant-based cuisine mainstream with a lens on its impact to mitigate climate change is timely, accessible and empowering,” said Annette Batson, the founder of Humane Montclair.

“Celebrating sustainable, plant-based dining in Montclair during the month of March is a win-win-win for New Jerseyans, small business and the planet,” Batson added.

Planted Society organized the first Plant Based for the Planet event in Austin, Texas in 2022. And according to executive director Britty Mann, another successful campaign is expected in Montclair.

“The people of Montclair care deeply about the health of the planet and actively support their restaurant community,” Mann said. “Through our partnered efforts with Humane Montclair and the enthusiastic commitments from our local restaurant partners, we are happy that Montclair citizens will be able to make dining choices that align with these compassionate values.”

Humane Montclair has been sharing photos of some of the tasty menu offerings that have been appearing at the participating restaurants. Check them out here.
