5 Republicans File To Run Against Rep. Mikie Sherrill In NJ-11 Primary

NEW JERSEY — No Democrats filed to challenge U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill in the 2022 primary election by Monday’s deadline, according to an unofficial list from the New Jersey Division of Elections.

Five candidates are vying for the Republican nod against Sherrill, who represents the state’s 11th congressional district (Essex, Morris and Passaic counties).

Sherrill, who listed Montclair as a filing address and gathered 5,076 petition signatures, was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018. She successfully defended her seat in 2020.

A large field of Republican candidates announced plans to challenge Sherrill over the past year. But only five have filed petitions to run in the primary election: Ruth McAndrew, Tayfun Selen, Toby Anderson, Paul DeGroot and Alexander Halter.

  • McAndrew, who listed Mendham as a filing address, gathered 231 petition signatures and ran on the slogans: “#Nurse #Farmer #NotAPolitician” (Essex), “Make Your Vote Count” (Morris) and “Take Back Our House” (Passaic).
  • Selen, who listed Chatham as a filing address, gathered 405 petition signatures and ran on the slogans: “Essex County Republican Party Organization, Inc.” (Essex), “Regular Republican Organization” (Morris), and “Passaic County Republican” (Passaic).
  • Anderson, who listed Morristown as a filing address, gathered 452 petition signatures and ran on the slogan “America First Veteran” in all three counties.
  • DeGroot, who listed Pine Brook as a filing address, gathered 340 petition signatures and ran on the slogans: “A Republican Fighter Who Can Win” in Essex and Morris, and “Passaic County Regular Republican Organization, Inc.” (Passaic).
  • Halter, who listed Denville as a filing address, gathered 243 petition signatures and ran on the slogan “America First” in Essex and Morris counties.

The 2022 primary election in New Jersey takes place on Tuesday, June 7. The winners of that election will earn their party’s nomination for the general election, which takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and which will also include independent candidates.
