African-American Pioneer Clifton Wharton To Speak In Montclair

Wharton will appear at the Montclair Library on April 3.

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority will welcome Clifton R. Wharton Jr. to discuss his book, “Privilege and Prejudice: The Life of a Black Pioneer,” on Sunday, April 3, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Montclair Public Library, 50 South Fullerton Avenue in Montclair, New Jersey.

The free, public event will include comments from Wharton Jr., the first African-American student accepted to the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins.

“The first black student accepted to the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins, Wharton went on to receive a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago, another first,” event organizers stated in a news release.

“For 22 years he promoted agricultural development in Latin America and Southeast Asia, earning a post as chairman of the Rockefeller Foundation. He again pioneered higher education firsts as president of Michigan State University and chancellor of the sixty-four-campus University of New York system. As chairman and CEO of TIAA-CREF, he was the first black CEO of a Fortune 500 company. His commitment to excellence culminated in his appointment as deputy secretary of state during the Clinton administration.”
