Aging In Montclair’s Saturday Social on July 30 at 4 p.m. will present veteran journalist Kathleen Carroll, chair of the board of the Committee to Protect Journalists. Readers and viewers of news may not realize the grave dangers journalists often face as they cover news stories around the world. As Ms. Carroll notes, “In the last decade, 283 journalists around the world have been murdered for doing their jobs. And in 81 percent of those cases, no one has been prosecuted, convicted or held accountable for those deaths in any way.” She will discuss the reasons behind these alarming statistics and why she believes there has never been a more dangerous time to be a journalist, including here in the United States.

Kathleen Carroll began her journalism career at her hometown Dallas Morning News and later worked for the San Jose Mercury News, the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau, and Associated Press bureaus in several cities. From 2002 through 2016, as senior vice president and executive editor of The Associated Press, she was responsible for coverage from journalists in more than 100 countries. Under her leadership, AP journalists won numerous awards, including five Pulitzer Prizes.
