MONTCLAIR, NJ — What are the “keys to tenancy” in New Jersey? That’s a question renters can get answers to through a new online toolkit hosted by the Montclair Public Library.
The multimedia toolkit is designed to serve as an “easy to navigate resource hub” for renters across the state. The goal? To empower renters and foster a greater understanding of tenant rights, organizers say.
In addition to renter rights, the website also includes information about where to find affordable housing and the eviction process.
The New Jersey Keys to Tenancy toolkit can be found online here.
The project will fully launch to the public with a family friendly kick-off event from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 31 at the Montclair Public Library’s main branch, 50 South Fullerton Avenue. The event will include a presentation on tenant rights from Volunteer Lawyers for Justice, the premiere of the library’s Tenant Rights animated explainer video, a panel and Q&A session with local professionals, and a mixer with food and refreshments.
The first 50 people to register for the event will receive a free copy of the book “Mutual Aid: Building Solidarity During This Crisis (and the Next)” by Dean Spade.
Keys to Tenancy is funded in part by a grant from the Partners for Health Foundation in Montclair. The project is cosponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and made possible through funding from the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey.
“We are absolutely thrilled to bring New Jersey Keys to Tenancy to not only the Montclair community, but to people across the Garden State,” Library Director Radwa Ali said.
“By creating an online resource toolkit with an easy-to-understand video, we are ensuring that no matter where in New Jersey you rent, the 'keys' to understanding your rights and responsibilities are right at your fingertips,” Ali said.
