MONTCLAIR, NJ — Sunken manhole covers have been spotted at two intersections in Montclair, spurring a warning from township officials.
The township issued an advisory on Wednesday about “depressed manhole covers” at two locations:
“These depressed manhole covers may pose a hazard and could potentially cause damage to vehicles,” the advisory stated. “Please note that these manholes are owned and maintained by Verizon/Bell Atlantic and are not township infrastructure. As a result, the township is not authorized to perform repairs.”
Verizon has been notified and asked to address the issue as quickly as possible, the advisory said.
“In the meantime, the Department of Community Services will install temporary safety barriers around the affected manholes to help alert motorists and reduce the risk of vehicle damage until the utility company completes repairs,” Montclair officials added.
