Another New Biz In Upper Montclair: A Well Feathered Nest Opens Saturday

"We don't discriminate between people and pets."

That's the motto espoused by the owners of A Well Feathered Nest, a new home and gift boutique for people and pets that is celebrating its grand opening on Saturday.

Located at 547 Valley Road, the unique shop is nearly directly across the street from the pet store in Upper Montclair known as Iggy's Place. But the two establishments are very different.

"We focus on things that you aren't doing to see in any other store," said co-owner Ann Harries.

And she's right.

Among the items on display are a stainless steel bowl in which one can grow their own grass for cats or dogs—particularly good in the winter months. And the price? $15.

In addition, there are also beaded pet collars from Kenya for a cool $64.

So, not everything is cheap, but everything is indeed unusual—and gorgeous.

"This is not a typical pet store ... our collars are embellished ... our items are very special," said co-owner Tamra Cotugno.

And not all items are related to pets. There's also a lovely assortment of prints, mirrors, and home decor items. In addition, the store also boasts a menagerie of Yardbird metal creature sculptures, sculptures that have grown increasingly popular in recent years.

Cotugno, who lives in Montville, and Harries, who lives in Westwood, used to own Perennials in Westwood, another shop of novel gift items, accessories, and small furnishings for the home.

But they closed the store recently to try their luck in Montclair.

"We thought there would be a good clientele here for what we are offering," Cotugno said. "Upper Montclair is a great place to be and everyone here has been so nice."

So stop on by Saturday—snow or no snow—for the store's grand opening from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
