Big Road Project Planned For Bloomfield Avenue In Montclair
New traffic signals, crosswalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps are some of the improvements being planned for Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair.
MONTCLAIR, NJ — New traffic signals, crosswalks and ADA-compliant curb ramps are some of the improvements being planned for Bloomfield Avenue in Montclair, officials recently announced.
The proposed construction on Bloomfield Avenue – one of the busiest transportation corridors in Montclair – will take place on a 1.2-mile section of roadway beginning at the intersection of Mountain Drive and extending to Maple Avenue/Pine Street.
Bloomfield Avenue, also known as County Route 506, links the towns of Caldwell to the west and Bloomfield to the east. It’s owned and operated by Essex County.

Using federal Local Safety Program funding, the county is planning to create:
- New ADA Compliant Curb Ramps
- New Traffic Signals including Pedestrian Features
- New Extra-Wide Ergonomic Crosswalks
- Improved Traffic Conditions through the Corridor
- Improved Safety for All Users
- Improved Walkability through Corridor
- Improved Access to Local Businesses
An information session about the project will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Montclair Municipal Council Chambers, 205 Claremont Avenue. Learn more about this local event.

Officials said the tentative project schedule is:
- Final Design and Construction Bidding – 4th quarter of 2019
- Begin Construction – 2nd quarter of 2020
- Complete Construction – 3rd quarter of 2021
