Buzz Aldrin Recalls Classic ‘Simpsons’ Moment, 25 Years Later
Montclair native Buzz Aldrin: "Hopefully, astronauts now know not to bring ruffled snacks into outer space."
MONTCLAIR, NJ — Hopefully, astronauts now know not to bring ruffled snacks into outer space. So went a Sunday morning tweet from world-famous astronaut Buzz Aldrin – a Montclair native who regularly gets thousands of likes for his wide variety of social media posts.
Aldrin – one of the first people to walk on the moon – was referring to a now-classic episode of The Simpsons, “Deep Space Homer,” which first broadcast on Feb. 24, 1994.
In the episode, NASA unwisely picks Homer Simpson for an outer space mission, hoping to boost public interest in spaceflight. Chaos ensues when his incompetence destroys the navigation system on the space shuttle, including an iconic scene of Homer floating through zero-gravity munching on potato chips. (See clip below)
