ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — A car was sent careening into a home after a crash in Glen Ridge on Sunday, Montclair authorities reported.

According to the Montclair Fire Department, which provides coverage for Glen Ridge, a crew was dispatched to Ridgewood Avenue around 10:25 a.m. after a crash took place near the intersection of Tuxedo Road.

One of the cars involved in the crash rolled about 75 feet off the road and careened through the wall of a nearby home’s garage, finally stopping inside the structure after taking out a large section of the brick exterior wall.

"Fire department personnel determined that the stability of the structure had been compromised. Fire crews were able to build a ‘T’ Shore inside the building to ensure that a collapse would not occur … The building department was on location to evaluate the structure and confirm that it was not in danger of further collapse. Montclair Fire Units remained on scene for two hours to ensure that the building was safe until permanent repairs could be made."

These types of emergencies often present an “extremely high risk” to the civilians involved, as well as the rescuers, Duncan noted.
