Chelsea Classical Studio -- Narrative Painting Workshop
Stephanie Deshpande teaches a two-day workshop that will help students create a painting that tells a story and imparts a sense of drama.
A narrative scene will be constructed using a clothed model, simple props, and lighting. The goal will be to move beyond a figure study and to depict a more complex environment. The process of painting will be explained, beginning with the underpainting, building up the colors, and finalizing the image. Oil painting techniques will be discussed as well as the differences between alla prima and indirect painting methods. The importance of comparing values, measuring, finding edges, and looking for color relationships will also be emphasized.
