Concert In Montclair: American String Quartet, Alan Stepansky
Congregation Shomrei Emunah will host a concert featuring the American String Quartet with cellist Alan Stepansky, a Montclair resident.

Congregation Shomrei Emunah will present a concert featuring the acclaimed American String Quartet with cellist Alan Stepansky, a Montclair resident who has had a stellar career including with the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and the Boston Pops. The concert will take place on Sunday, November 5 at 4 p.m. at Shomrei Emunah, 67 Park Street in Montclair, and is sponsored by the Eric Singer Charitable Fund.
The program will consist of an arrangement of the Ernest Bloch’s “Prayer” for solo cello and string quartet and the Quintet by Schubert for quartet (two violins, viola, and cello) and an extra cello (also known as the Schubert 2 cello quintet). It’s one of the most beautiful and beloved piece in the entire chamber music repertoire.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the quartet features Peter Winograd, violin; Laurie Carney, violin; Daniel Avshalomov, viola and Wolfram Koessel, cello.
Formerly the Associate Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic, Alan Stepansky is currently Professor of Cello and Chair of the Strings Department at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University where he recently received its highest honor for teaching - the 2023 Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award. Also on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music, he can be heard frequently in concert as a soloist and chamber musician and is also active in the recording studio, performing as the solo cellist on well over 50 major motion picture sound tracks as well as on the albums of a diverse array of artists across many genres.

Tickets are $20 for adults in advance and $25 at the door. Admission is free for college students with ID and children under 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance at shomrei.org/concert.
