Just when you thought it was safe to go outside wearing normal shoes, here we go again with the snow. But instead of cursing the snowiest winter in more than a decade, embrace your inner ski bunny.
Skiing, snowboarding, and tubing are not merely family activities to be suffered through with a good book and a flask. Rather, grab a friend, drop the kids at the bus, and hit the slopes for a day-long girlfriend getaway in the great outdoors, back in plenty of time for pickup.
Mountain Creek Resort is less than an hour away, basically right up Route 23. A day ticket is $49.99, and you’ll save $3 if you buy your ticket online (we like to think of it as a getting a free hot chocolate). While it’s not the biggest mountain in the East (summit elevation is 1,480’ and there are a total of 41 trails) Mountain Creek does boast two high speed quads and a high speed gondola. And 100% of the mountain has snowmaking coverage.

There are also acres of freestyle/terrain parks and tubing, although tubing hours are much more limited than the rest of the resort, so check first if this is your primary interest. Ski lifts open at 9 a.m. and don’t close until after dark. And of course, whether you’re in the mood for a quick bowl of chili or a more relaxing meal and/or drinks, Mountain Creek has you covered with several different restaurants and bars.
And if you do decide to make a great escape to this or any other local ski mountain, please go with a friend, or at least make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’re planning to return. And please wear a helmet. In addition to the safety consideration, they’re super warm.
