Essex County Deals With Flood Damage After Sunday Storm

Fish seen swimming in Newark sewer drain; Flooding to Turnpike and GSP.

Residents of Essex County continue to deal with the fallout from Sunday night’s storm, which caused significant flooding throughout the region.

Reported damage and delays included:

  • Fish were seen swimming in a Newark sewer drain after a municipal lake overflowed
  • The National Weather Service reported that 11 people were rescued from a flooded road in Newark, which saw 3.65 inches of rain in the six-hour period ending at 7:51 p.m., making it the third-wettest May calendar day on record in the city
  • NJ511 reported flooding on the New Jersey Turnpike - Eastern Spur inner roadway southbound North of Southern Mixing Bowl in Newark, as well as US 1&9 Truck Route northbound at Raymond Blvd in Newark
  • Several flights scheduled to arrive in Newark, LaGuardia and JFK airports were delayed or cancelled
  • Weather and volume-related delays were also seen on the New Jersey Turnpike – Eastern and Western Spurs, the Garden State Parkway southbound from Exit 150, U.S. 1&9 northbound, N.J.-21 southbound near Chester Avenue, and N.J.-24 westbound in Millburn

A National Weather Service flash flood warning remains in effect for Essex County through Tuesday evening.
