Essex County Democrats Elected By Landslides: Executive, Sheriff

Democrats Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. and Armando Fontoura had landslide victories in Essex County, according to unofficial election results.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — The Blue Wave triumphed in the Essex County races for executive, sheriff, surrogate and the Board of Chosen Freeholders on Tuesday, according to early election results.

With 508 of 550 districts reporting, it was a projected sweep for Democratic candidates, who soundly defeated their Republican opponents, according to unofficial results from the Essex County Clerk’s Office.

ESSEX COUNTY EXECUTIVE

Democrat Joseph DiVincenzo Jr., with 153,941 votes (80.9%), triumphed over Republican John Chiaia, with 31,507 votes (16.56%) and independent candidate John Jay Arena, who had 4,678 votes (2.46%).

There were 160 write-in votes (0.08%)

ESSEX COUNTY SHERIFF

Democrat Armando Fontoura, with 151,770 votes (81.54%), beat Republican Pasquale Capozzoli, with 34,184 votes (18.37%).

There were 166 write-in votes (0.09%).

ESSEX COUNTY SURROGATE

Democrat Alturrick Kenney, with 147,554 votes (79.89%), defeated Republican John Anello, with 36,996 votes (20.03%).

There were 148 write-in votes (0.08%).

ESSEX COUNTY BOARD OF CHOSEN FREEHOLDERS

Running unopposed, Democrat Tyshammie L. Cooper gathered 34,006 votes (99.87%) to capture an unexpired term on the Board of Chosen Freeholders (District 3).

There were 45 write-in votes (0.13%).
