Essex County Has Third-Highest Coronavirus Fatality Rate In NJ
See town-by-town COVID case and death totals for Essex County, as well as its nursing homes.
ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Essex County has the third-highest coronavirus fatality rate in New Jersey, according to recent statistics.
There have been 16,140 positive COVID-19 test results with 1,528 deaths in Essex County as of Sunday, a 9.46 percent fatality rate, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.
There were only two counties with a higher fatality rate:

- Sussex County – 1,056 positive results, 138 deaths (13.06 percent fatality rate)
- Warren County – 1,078 positive results, 120 deaths (11.13 percent fatality rate)
Other county totals as of Sunday included:
- Morris County – 6,036 positive results, 561 deaths (9.29 percent fatality rate)
- Somerset County – 4,255 positive results, 375 deaths (8.81 percent fatality rate)
- Bergen County – 17,361 positive results, 1,455 deaths (8.38 percent fatality rate)
- Cape May County – 503 positive results, 41 deaths (8.15 percent fatality rate)
- Ocean County – 7,913 positive results, 626 deaths (7.91 percent fatality rate)
- Mercer County – 5,825 positive results, 407 deaths (6.98 percent fatality rate)
- Monmouth County – 7,339 positive results, 508 deaths (6.92 percent fatality rate)
- Union County – 14,702 positive results, 957 deaths (6.50 percent fatality rate)
- Hunterdon County – 808 positive results, 52 deaths (6.43 percent fatality rate)
- Atlantic County – 1,758 positive results, 112 deaths (6.37 percent fatality rate)
- Gloucester County – 1,832 positive results, 116 deaths (6.33 percent fatality rate)
- Burlington County – 3,937 positive results, 239 deaths (6.07 percent fatality rate)
- Hudson County – 17,447 positive results, 1,057 deaths (6.05 percent fatality rate)
- Middlesex County – 14,668 positive results, 884 deaths (6.02 percent fatality rate)
- Passaic County – 15,205 positive results, 838 deaths (5.51 percent fatality rate)
- Camden County – 5,455 positive results, 272 deaths (4.98 percent fatality rate)
- Salem County - 459 positive results, 19 deaths (4.13 percent fatality rate)
- Cumberland County – 1,608 positive results, 51 deaths (3.17 percent fatality rate)
Essex County officials noted that “an unusually large number of results” were reported over the weekend, which was partly due to an initiative to test all long-term care facility residents and staff.

Essex County released a town-by-town breakdown of the latest COVID-19 totals as of Monday morning. NOTE: The totals may not match other reports or the state health department’s statistics, as cases are continually entering the system and local health departments may reassign place of residence as appropriate during their investigations.

NURSING, RETIREMENT HOMES
In the past few weeks, state and local officials have started taking a hard look at coronavirus infection numbers in New Jersey’s long-term care facilities, which include nursing homes and retirement homes.
As of Sunday afternoon, there were 2,637 cases and 538 deaths at 46 long-term care facilities in Essex County, a 20.4 percent fatality rate, according to the New Jersey Department of Health.
