Kirtan is the yoga of voice, using sound to balance and soothe your mind and uplift your spirit. Chanting creates the experience of oneness with the group and with all life. Sung call and response style is a part of the rich Indian devotional chant tradition. In its heartfelt expression, Kirtan can carry us to stillness, awakening the core of our being and inducing profound states of meditation and bliss.
You are invited to experience for yourself the power of this ancient meditative tradition through the medium of musical expression. Led by classical Indian vocalist and harmonium player, Andrew Shantz, we will chant simple Sanskrit mantras which are easily learned through call and response. Though Kirtan is sung, the practice of chanting is not about musical ability, it is about the heart. The chants contain renewing and transformational energies that serve to reconnect us to the ever-present Awareness that lies within and connects all of us. There are no pre-requisites – Kirtan is for everyone.
Andrew Shantz has a degree in jazz piano from Wm. Paterson University and has studied Hindustani vocal music in Calcutta under Smt. Madhumita Saha since 2008. He has performed on vocal and harmonium in Calcutta and with his teacher and her husband Pt. Samar Saha during their North American tours.
