Local Middle School Robotics Teams Compete and Raise Awareness

Can FIRST® LEGO® League Teams improve our quality of life? Through the 2010 Body ForwardTM Challenge, 9 to 14 year olds will explore the cutting-edge world of Biomedical Engineering to discover innovative ways to repair injuries, overcome genetic predispositions, and maximize the body's potential, with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives.

During the robot game, teams build and program an autonomous robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS technology to score points in 2.5-minute matches on a themed playing field. As part of their project, teams explore an actual problem that today's scientists and engineers are trying to solve, develop an innovative solution to that problem and share their findings.

Some of the projects to be presented include topics such as: stem cell research, portable dialysis machines, creating a human "eagle" eye, sideline concussion tester, innovative cancer treatments, and exoskeleton technologies.

24 regional teams will be competing at the NJ FLL Montclair Qualifying Tournament,  including teams from Montclair, Livingston, Wyckoff, and Verona. We have numerous rookie teams and an all-girls team registered. Making a return appearance is last year's NJ Robot Design finalist, Yo-botics.

The Montclair Society of Engineers is sponsoring the NJ FLL Montclair Qualifying Tournament. All monies raised at the event will be used for our scholarship fund. Montclair Society of Engineers distributes scholarships to local high school seniors and college students in the fields of engineering and supports our local robotics teams. These funds are used to help economically disadvantaged students attend the robotics competitions, pay for supplies, and support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs.

This event is free and open to the public. The event will be held on Saturday, November 20th, 2010 at Montclair High School -- 100 Chestnut Street. Doors open at 8 am, with teams practicing and being judged on their projects in the morning. The real excitement begins with the "opening ceremonies" at 1 pm and then teams compete in three different rounds of robot performance. Families are always welcome.
