This summer, NJPAC and NJYT are taking their show on the road, presenting Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Broadway’s longest-running musical revue, at Montclair State University's Alexander Kasser Theater. Smokey Joe’s Cafe is a nostalgic, neon-lit juke box musical that collects the timeless hit list created by the team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. As much as anyone, these are the songwriters who virtually invented rock-and-roll, and their songs (the show includes nearly 40 of them) provide the basis Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Set in an idealized 1950’s era, the show spotlights a golden age of American music and pop culture with electrifying renditions of titles like “On Broadway,” “Stand by Me,” “Spanish Harlem,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog,” “Yakety Yak,” “Poison Ivy,” “Charlie Brown,” “Love Potion #9,” and dozens more.
