On Sunday, May 1 at Bliss Lounge in Clifton, N.J., Swingman and the Misfit-Mutts Band will present another reason for you to get out and enjoy.
“Swingman and the Misfit-Mutts Band” (or Swingman for short) is the brainchild of local Clifton'ite Ray Grabowski. Swingman is a contemporary band with Swing and Blues overtones created exclusively for your dancing pleasure, and for those who appreciate good music. Whether you choose to listen, tap your shoes, or cut the rug on the dance floor, you are sure to be entertained. Noting the shortage of dance halls and night clubs that feature this style of music, Swingman is expected to bring both young and the young-at-heart out to dance and have fun.
Mr. Grabowski, creator of the band, and also the bands’ drummer, is a long time student of Carrie Babcock, owner of the The Fred Astaire Dance Studio of Upper Montclair. The Fred Astaire Montclair staff and students will be on hand at the event. “We played at Bliss on April 17,” says Babcock, who is also the lead female vocalist in the band. “Our students and staff mingled with the audience and everyone was on their feet during the whole show. The dancers never sat down!” There will be a swing dance contest (amateurs only) during the evening with a $100 cash prize. “Last Sunday two ladies won the contest, dancing a mean-jitterbug!” says Babcock, who also had some students participate in the contest.
The Fred Astaire of Upper Montclair will offer beginning Swing Dance Classes to prepare new students for upcoming Swingman gigs. “Music aficionados will love Swingman,” states Babcock, “but we want people to be able to get up and dance if the want to, so we’re offering short, 4-week beginning Swing crash-courses.”
