Guitarist and multi-instrumentalist John Ehlis gathers a group of talented and like-minded musicians who bring a spirit of adventure to his distinctive and appealing music.  Each musician contributes his or her voice and artistic imagination to the ensemble making every performance a unique musical journey.

Amalia Lopez Chueca, from Granada, Spain is equally versed on the cello in both classical and improvised music and has performed across Europe in numerous settings.  She is a member of saxophonist Paul Stockers’ "Dubidubi Band" and the jazz trio, "Sense of Values" with pianist José Ignacio Hernández and bassist Miguel Ángel Pimentel.  Her style is defined by the merging of Flamenco, Latin and Jazz traditions.

Over the past several years, Amalia has immersed herself in the vibrant scene in New York City, including studies with acclaimed cellist Akua Dixon and pianist Barry Harris.  It was last summer that Ehlis and Chueca met as participants in Karl Bergers’ Stone Workshop Orchestra.  Berger has long served the creative music community as a focal point for mutli-cultural collaborations.

Both Ehlis and saxophonist Alex Weiss travelled along parallel routes in San Francisco during the 90’s, performing with many of the same musicians and at the same venues, but never together.  Recently they played at a jam session in Manhattan with the great Danish saxophonist John Tchicai and discovered an ease and natural sense of playing together.

Currently residing in New York, Weiss performs with numerous groups including John Tchicai’s Five Points.  This will be his first appearance with the John Ehlis Ensemble.
