Rustin was a master strategist and tireless activist who brought Gandhi’s protest techniques to the American civil rights movement. Despite his accomplishments, he was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era.
A recent book, I Must Resist: Bayard Rustin’s Life in Letters, was published in March on the centennial of Rustin’s birth, and presents more than 150 eloquent and impassioned letters to major progressives of his day. Michael J. Long, editor of the book, will give a talk highlighting the Quaker roots of Rustin’s resistance. Rustin’s surviving partner Walter Naegle will also be present.
