WEST AFRICAN DRUM, DANCE and SONG with MARAFANYI in Montclair

JSDD’s Wellness, Arts, Enrichment (WAE) Center concludes the seventh season of its Global Beat Series with the energetic and engaging West African drumming, dancing and song of MARAFANYI.  The production is presented in cooperation with the Montclair Public Library, where the production will take place.

Combining rhythm, movement, song and spoken word, this high-energy ensemble performs original and West African based music. The group is comprised of international percussionists and teaching artists Lara Gonzalez and Yael Schacham, who began studying and making music together 15 years ago.  Falling in love with the music of West Africa, they have traveled to Guinea frequently to study with master artists and focus on the dynamic rhythms & dances of different ethnic groups.  Their infectious energy, genuine warmth, and rock solid musical talent will delight audience members of all ages.

Operating as a program of Jewish Service for the Developmentally Disabled (JSDD) of MetroWest, Inc., the WAE Center provides artistic, educational and health enhancing opportunities to people with disabilities. Since August, the MARAFANYI performers have been working with an enthusiastic group of students at the WAE Center teaching them African drumming, dance and song in preparation for the October 4th show.
