Family Science Fun and Camp Open House

New summer science and engineering camp for ages 3-12 in Montclair, also offering middle school counselor in training program.

Sunday, March 26th from 1-4pm, come explore science activities with your kids at the Scientific Kids Camp open house! Our camp space at Montclair Cooperative school will be open and science activities for families will be set up to enjoy at your own pace. Come meet and hold our Walking Stick Insects (if you are brave enough!), design, create, and test a flinker (an object that doesn’t sink to the bottom or float to the top), and design a marble roller coaster! The creator and director of the camp, Sarah Thornton, will be there to answer any questions you may have as well.
Scientific Kids Camp is designed by a veteran elementary science teacher to support childrens’ innate wonder and interest in the natural world and how things work. There are no pre-made kits. They are not following recipes or experiment directions. This is a place where kids truly explore their own questions, create their own experiments, and build and test vehicles and toys of their own design. Outdoor science exploration, water play (bubbles! Water blasters!) and free play is an important part of each day as well.
Sessions are primarily geared towards kids entering 1st-6th grade, and one session for 3-5 year olds. Girls will enjoy animal science, chemistry, and an egg drop off of the roof in their own session, Lab Girls. Chem Lab is a three day camp where kids will design and create their own candy, drinks, and toothpaste. Kids who enjoy touching, learning about and creating friendly experiments for insects, invertebrates (slugs, snails, and worms!), and snakes will love Creepy Crawly Critters. Toys, rockets, and vehicles will be designed, built, and tested in Make it Move. In Buildorama, towers, bridges, and other building challenges (watch out for earthquakes and hurricanes!) will be worked on in small groups. In Electricity City, older campers will use electrical circuits to design and build greeting cards, motorized toys and bots, while younger campers will design a city out of blocks, and create their own miniature shoebox house complete with electric lighting. Animal Science For Littles (for ages 3-5) will introduce young children to a variety of animals, with many opportunities to observe, touch, and hold them. Their questions will be used to design friendly experiments.
