As per Fourth of July tradition, J, I and the kids hopped in the car to make the 2-hour drive to my parents’ cabin in the Catskills. Not every family is lucky enough to have access to a second home, nor a yearly tradition with four-generations of family, so since moving to Montclair in 2008, J and I have done everything in our power to make it up there.
My mom has never been one to skimp on the holiday cheer (probably where I picked it up?) so our weekend has been a 24/7 spectacle of patriotic craft projects and flag-themed cakes. For my mom, this is just another good excuse to spend time with her grandchildren. But for J and I, this sort of patriotism has always caused a small conflict in our normally-cohesive parenting style.
