Groundbreaking For 3-Story Building At Mountainside Hospital

Developers say the 45,735-square-foot facility will create better healthcare for the Montclair, Glen Ridge and Essex County communities.

MONTCLAIR, NJ — If all goes according to plan, by early 2020, there will be a new medical office building sitting across from the Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Center. And developers say that the three-story, 45,735-square-foot facility – to be built at the former School of Nursing site – will ultimately help to create better healthcare for the Mountainside Hospital community.

Earlier this week, hospital officials and local elected representatives from Montclair and Glen Ridge gathered to celebrate a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future medical building, which is being developed by Morristown-based The Hampshire Companies, with Circle Squared Alternative Investments serving as the project investment advisor.

The building will house office spaces for physicians and medical specialists. The project includes the addition of 229 parking spots and entrances/exits on both Bay Avenue and Walnut Crescent. Designed by project architect, NK Architects, the project will be 100% pre-leased to Mountainside Medical Center upon its completion in the 1Q of 2020, developers said.

Administrators said that the new building will “mark the next chapter” in the hospital’s history.

“It’s a very competitive market for the best doctors and they want first-class, state-of-the-art office space in convenient proximity to the hospital for themselves and their patients,” said Mountainside CEO John Fromhold.

“By delivering that, this new building will allow us to attract and retain leading primary care physicians and specialists,” Fromhold added. “We are thankful to our neighbors and to both the Montclair and Glen Ridge Planning Boards for providing their valuable input. Our joint efforts have brought about an exciting opportunity for our communities.”

In 2012, Mountainside Medical Center was sold to a joint venture of LHP Hospital Group, Inc. and Hackensack University Health Network. It continues to operate as a for-profit entity and pays property taxes to both municipalities and sales tax to the state of New Jersey.
